CBD water unlikely to be beneficial

UCI Health cannabis expert says amounts are too low to make a difference

IN THE NEWS: The possible benefits of cannabidiol (CBD) ― a non-intoxicating compound derived from hemp and cannabis plants ― have consumers flocking to products with the substance, including water.

Daniele Piomelli, PhD, PharmD, director of the UCI Center for the Study of Cannabis, spoke to Forbes about CBD water and whether it offers people any value.

While research exists on CBD as a compound that links it to potential anxiety relief, improved sleep quality and pain management, Piomelli says, clinical research on CBD water specifically is incredibly limited. This makes it difficult for consumers to determine the exact benefits of consuming it, if any.

“Since CBD water typically contains so little CBD, about 10 milligrams, CBD water is unlikely to have any benefit. What's more, the nature of the specific CBD formulation may affect its ability to be absorbed well and used effectively by the body.”

Piomelli is a distinguished professor of anatomy and neurobiology and the Louise Turner Arnold Chair in the Neurosciences at the UCI School of Medicine. He currently studies how endocannabinoid substances and other lipid-derived signaling molecules affect the function of the brain and other organs. Piomelli is the author of over 400 peer-reviewed articles, three full-length books and holds 34 patents. He is also the editor-in-chief of Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, the first peer-reviewed journal entirely dedicated to the study of cannabis, its derivatives, and their endogenous counterparts in the human body.
