Burn survivor, Iraq veteran and former Dancing With the Stars winner J.R. Martinez meets burn patients and survivors, firefighters and healthcare providers at UC Irvine Health Regional Burn Center

A board member for the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, Martinez shares the inspirational story of his treatment and recovery with patients, survivors and caregivers around the country.

Each year, the UC Irvine Health burn team treats more than 600 patients—one-third of them children—for all kinds of burns, from mild to severe and life-threatening. The healthcare professionals at UC Irvine Health Regional Burn Center are dedicated to the complete physical and emotional healing of our patients through advanced surgical techniques, innovative synthetic skin treatments, expert care and comprehensive support after their hospital treatment.

A severe burn can be one of the most painful injuries a human body can endure, both physically and emotionally. Proper recovery rests upon a continuum of care provided by first responders, medical professionals and support groups and programs for survivors. UC Irvine Health Regional Burn Center and Anaheim Fire & Rescue share the Phoenix Society’s mission to support survivors and are lead sponsors of the organization’s 2014 Phoenix World Burn Congress to be held in Anaheim October 21-25, 2014.

The Phoenix World Burn Congress brings together more than 850 burn survivors, their families, caregivers, burn care professionals and firefighters. The forum encourages and facilitates the sharing of stories, provides support and increases knowledge of burn recovery. For many it is the first opportunity to meet and share with others who have experienced a burn trauma.
