Post-Concussion Syndrome

Most people are able to recover from a concussion within several days or weeks. Post-concussion syndrome is a concussion complication in which recovery can take several months to more than a year.

Symptoms

Post-concussion symptoms include:

  • Anxiety
  • Behavioral changes
  • Dizziness
  • Emotional changes
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Loss of concentration
  • Loss of memory
  • Sensitivity to noise and light

Risk factors

There are three primary risk factors for developing post-concussion syndrome:

  • Your age. As you get older, you are at greater risk of developing post-concussion syndrome.
  • Your sex. Women are more likely to develop post-concussion syndrome.
  • Sustaining trauma. Concussions as a result of assault, accidents, falls and sports have a link to post-concussion syndrome.

Treatment

Patients who show symptoms of post-concussion syndrome are able to recover with plenty of rest and by reducing their stress.

Your physician may also treat the specific symptoms of post-concussion syndrome that you are experiencing. For example, pain medications may be given for headaches, while you may be referred to a psychiatrist for any neurological symptoms.
