Orange, Calif. — UCI Health has been recognized as a five-star hospital and a top 10 performer nationally in the 2023 Bernard A. Birnbaum, MD, Quality Leadership Annual Ranking by Vizient, Inc. UCI Medical Center was ranked in the top 10 for comprehensive academic medical centers in the U.S. for inpatient care. The UCI Health outpatient care network was also ranked among the top 10 ambulatory systems nationwide.

“UCI Health is a national leader in providing accessible care driven by clinical innovation and a relentless commitment to quality,” said Chad T. Lefteris, CEO of UCI Health. “We are proud that the work of our amazing UCI Health clinicians and co-workers is recognized in one of the country’s top 10 comprehensive academic medical centers.”

“Providing our patients with the safest environment and highest quality of care is the top priority for UCI Health,” said Dr. Joseph C. Carmichael, chief medical officer for UCI Health. “The annual Vizient Quality and Accountability Scorecards are the gold standard for academic medical centers across the country use to measure their progress toward this goal.”

UCI Health is Orange County’s only academic health system and benchmarks its quality and safety performance against the nation’s top health systems. Vizient analyzes data for 116 centers in its comprehensive academic medical center cohort. The 2023 recognition is for the period spanning July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023. The Birnbaum award honors academic medical centers and community hospitals that demonstrate excellence in delivering high-quality care based on measures of safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness and equity of care.

UCI Medical Center has consistently been recognized for quality and safety. The health system was cited as a top performer by Vizient in its 2022 Ambulatory Quality and Accountability Ranking, one of only four facilities in the U.S. to be recognized for demonstrating excellence in delivering high-quality outpatient care. UCI Medical Center also received the Birnbaum Quality Leadership Award in 2021.

“UCI Health has demonstrated high level commitment to the continuous improvement that is necessary to succeed in today’s evolving healthcare environment,” said David Levine, group senior vice president, advanced analytics and data science for Vizient.
