UCI Health physicians share expert health insights at Newport Beach Library series

Public invited to learn more about latest advances in treatment options

UCI Health invites the public to learn more about the latest advances in diagnosis, treatment options and research findings from world-renown experts on a wide variety of health issues, diseases and chronic conditions.

 The Newport Beach Library lecture series is held from 7 – 8:30 p.m., monthly starting in September with topics ranging from age-related vision problems, cancer advances, heart and colon health to hearing, voice and joint problems.

The schedule for the 2016 – 2017 “Medicine in our backyard: the leading edge” lecture series features the following topics and experts:

Sept. 26 – Age-Related Macular Degeneration and Other Retina Problems, Baruch Kuppermann, M.D., Ph.D.

• Dr. Kuppermann is chief of the retina service at the UCI Health Gavin Herbert Eye Institute and is the principal investigator for several national trials evaluating new drugs and devices for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and the ocular complications of AIDS.

Oct. 24 – Advances in Cancer Care with Edward Nelson, M.D.

• Dr. Nelson is chief of the UCI Health Division of Hematologic Oncology and a translational physician-scientist, tumor immunologist who conducts both laboratory and clinical studies with a focus of improving the ability of the immune system to fight a patient’s cancer.

Nov. 28 – You Can’t Hear Me and I Can’t Talk Louder — Hearing and Voice Problems As You Age with Hamid Djalilian, M.D., and Sunil P. Verma, M.D.

• Dr. Djalilian is director of the UCI Health Otology, Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery Program. He is board-certified and fellowship trained in otology, neurotology and skull base surgery. In addition to routine conditions of the ear, his areas of expertise include complex ear surgery, hearing loss, balance disorders, facial nerve paralysis and skull base surgery.

• Dr. Verma is the director of the University Voice & Swallowing Center and is a board certified otolaryngologist and head-and-neck surgeon. Additional subspecialty training in laryngology gives him unique qualifications to manage and treat disorders of the throat, including voice, swallowing and breathing conditions.

Jan. 30 – Is a Shoulder Replacement Right for You? with Ranjan Gupta, M.D.,

• Dr. Gupta is a professor in the UCI Health Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery has a particular interest in joint replacement and minimally invasive/arthroscopic shoulder surgery. As one of only two active members of the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Society practicing in Orange County, Dr. Gupta enjoys seeing patients with routine orthopaedic problems as well as tackling the most challenging clinical cases.  

Feb. 27 – Diagnosis, Management and Prevention of Coronary Artery Disease with Pranav M. Patel, M.D.

• Dr. Pranav Patel is chief of cardiology  and director of the UCI Health Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory. He is board certified in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology and specializes in invasive and noninvasive approaches to treat coronary heart disease, peripheral artery disease and heart valve disease.

March 27 – Colorectal Health with C. Gregory Albers, M.D., and William Karnes, M.D.

• Dr. Albers is a board-certified gastroenterologist and director of Diagnostic Services at the UCI Health H.H. Chao Comprehensive Digestive Center. His clinical interests include capsule endoscopy, colon cancer screening, gastroesophageal reflux, inflammatory bowel disease, gut microbiome interactions and irritable bowel syndrome.
• Dr. William Karnes is a fellowship-trained gastroenterologist and is director of the Colon Cancer Prevention Program at the UCI Health H.H. Chao Comprehensive Digestive Center. He specializes in disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, including colorectal cancer screening, gastrointestinal reflux disease, swallowing disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, peptic ulcers and esophageal disorders.

• Dr. Hermanowicz is director of the UCI Health Movement Disorders Program, vice chair for clinical affairs and professor in the Department of Neurology, UC Irvine School of Medicine and an expert in movement disorders, including Parkinson’s Disease.
• Dr. Phielipp is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology, UC Irvine School of Medicine. He is a fellowship-trained neurologist who specializes in the care and treatment of patients with Parkinson’s disease, dystonias, tremor, Huntington’s disease and other movement disorders.

• Dr. Kawas is a professor in the Department of Neurology, UC Irvine School of Medicine and a professor of neurobiology and behavior, in the UC Irvine School of Biological Sciences. Her work is concentrated on the epidemiology of aging and Alzheimer’s disease, in the determinants of successful aging, longitudinal and clinical pathological investigations, clinical trials, and most recently, studies in cognitive and functional abilities of the Oldest Old (over 90 years of age).
