UCI Health Susan Samueli Center hosts annual Women’s Wellness Day

This year’s theme is All About You – Mind, Body, Spirit

April 22, 2016

The UCI Health Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine is hosting the 14th annual Women’s Wellness Day, an educational opportunity for women who want to learn more about integrative healthcare. This year’s theme is “All About You – Mind, Body, Spirit.” Highlights include speakers, exhibits and other practical tools designed to empower women and help attendees reach optimal health and well-being.

UCI Health cardiologist Shaista Malik, MD, PhD, MPH and director of the Samueli Center, will open the program by sharing her insights into the impact of stress on heart health and the practical effects of stress reduction on preventing heart disease in women.

“Although 90 percent of heart disease is preventable by lifestyle change alone, a majority of women find it challenging to implement these changes,” Malik said. “Stress management is a primary component of positive lifestyle choices and results not only in heart disease prevention, but most other chronic diseases. We will discuss how to recognize unhealthy stress, the role it plays in our body and how best to manage stress for optimum health.”

This year’s keynote speaker is well-known Alzheimer’s disease expert and author Rudolph Tanzi, PhD. He will discuss the effects of Alzheimer’s disease, with a focus on therapeutics; the effects of the disease on the brain, mind, and self; and how to preserve brain health and help prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s with lifestyle interventions.

Tanzi is the Director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit and vice chair of neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital, as well as the Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Among his accomplishments, he has received the Smithsonian American Ingenuity Award and was named to the 2015 TIME 100 Most Influential People in the World list.

Additional program topics include discussions on maintaining agility, spiritual nourishment and culinary medicine. The exhibit marketplace features products and services focused on helping women achieve a healthier mind, body and spirit.

The 2016 Women’s Wellness Day will take place on Friday, May 13, from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Irvine Marriott, 18000 Von Karman Avenue, Irvine, CA 92612. For more information and to register for the event, please visit http://wwd.sscim.uci.edu.
