Developing end-of-life option policies

IN THE NEWS: California hospitals and healthcare providers are developing policies to implement the End of Life Option Act, which takes effect June 9. One of the most important issues is how the request for life-ending drugs is handled, Dr. Aaron Kheriaty, director of the UC Irvine Health Medical Ethics Program, tells the Orange County Register.

“At the bare minimum, such a person should go through a thorough psychological assessment to see what factors would be present for them to request the drug," Kheriaty said. "Is there anything we can offer such as addressing underlying anxiety or depression or better pain control?”

Kheriaty believes that comprehensive due diligence must be conducted before prescribing a life-ending drug. If not, the patient is being done a disservice.
