UCI Health invites the public to learn more about the latest advances in treatment, therapies and techniques for managing acute, chronic and cancer-related pain.

Dr. Padma Gulur, director, UCI Health Pain Management Services, will discuss innovations in pain medicine, emerging therapies and complementary techniques at 7 p.m. on Monday, March 28 at the Newport Beach Central Library. The discussion is part of the library’s lecture series, “Medicine in our backyard: the leading edge.”

“Living with chronic pain can be overwhelming and lonely. Whether it’s you or a loved one who suffers, there is hope,” Gulur said. “There are advances in pain medicine every day and your doctor can help you manage your pain. Patients can also help manage their pain through complementary techniques, such as acupuncture, therapeutic massage and restorative yoga.”

In addition to medications, patients have a wide range of treatment options available, including emerging therapies like biofeedback and massage, as well as novel interventions such as radiofrequency nerve ablation and spinal cord stimulation.

Gulur says the goal, ultimately, is to develop personalized treatments based on blood tests that identify genetic markers to identify which medications will be most effective for each patient.

Audience members will have the opportunity to ask the doctor questions following her presentation.

The Newport Beach Central Library is located at 1000 Avocado Avenue, Newport Beach, CA 92660.
