With UC Irvine Health in his corner, patient revived from coma when others lost hope
May 06, 2015
IN THE NEWS: Despite test results and professional opinions from two other hospitals and a rehabilitation center, Ann Kaiser still strongly believed that her husband Marc could be revived from the coma he had been in for six-and-a-half months. She knew Marc’s recovery and rehabilitation would take time, but the first step was to get a second opinion. Ann tells the Orange County Register that she turned to the UC Irvine Health neurological critical care experts - Dr. Leonid Groysman, Dr. Cyrus Dastur and Dr. Yama Akbari.
After three months, they were able to bring Marc out of his vegetative state. Discharged to a rehabilitation facility for treatment and therapy to regain his strength, Marc was able to return home to Ann and their young triplet sons. The doctors credit Ann’s advocacy for saving Marc’s life. “Theirs was a love story of two people separated not by time and place, but by disease, and she found her way back to her husband,” Groysman said.
