NBC4 to highlight the gift of vision one young patient received after new procedure
August 12, 2014
IN THE NEWS: Tune in to NBC4 on Wednesday afternoon to see Dr. Robert Lingua and seven-year old Grace Nassar talk about the operations that restored her vision. Dr. Lingua, a pediatric ophthalmologist at the UC Irvine Health Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, will discuss this surgery with NBC4 health correspondent Dr. Bruce Hensel.
Grace was three months old when her parents were told she had nystagmus, a condition marked by uncontrollable eye movements. Worse, an underlying condition would eventually make Grace functionally blind.
By age seven, Grace was studying Braille, walking with a white cane and facing an uncertain future. An acquaintance told her parents about Dr. Lingua and the eye institute where Grace underwent a revolutionary operation last summer to eliminate her eye movements and improve her vision.
The interview will be broadcast during the 5:30 p.m. newscast in the Los Angeles area.
