UC Irvine physician explains eye telescope, macular degeneration

October 04, 2012
Dr. Sumit “Sam” Garg, medical director of UC Irvine’s Gavin Herbert Eye Institute

IN THE NEWS: Dr. Sam Garg, medical director of UC Irvine’s Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, recently appeared on PBS SoCal to discuss the implantable miniature telescope for patients with end-stage age-related macular degeneration. The condition is leading cause of blindness among older Americans and the device restores a portion of vision lost to the disease.

Garg was one of two UC Irvine ophthalmologists who were the first in Orange County to  implant the telescope in a patient’s eye. UC Irvine’s Gavin Herbert Eye Institute is the sole facility in Orange County and among only a few nationwide to offer this new technology.
