Minimally invasive colorectal surgery cuts clotting risk

June 20, 2011

UC Irvine surgeon Dr. Michael J. Stamos and colleagues report that patients who undergo minimally invasive laparascopic colorectal surgery were less likely to suffer from a type of blood clot called deep vein thrombosis than those undergoing traditional open surgery.

This type of surgery was also associated with shorter hospital stays and lower mortality rates compared with the open resection..

The report was published in the June issue of Archives of Surgery.
