Rethinking the role of nurses

UC Irvine’s Program in Nursing Science was established in 2006 to help fill the growing need for highly qualified nurses in California. Soon it may also play a role in the transformation of the U.S. healthcare system.

“In today’s complex healthcare environment, nurses have greater responsibilities to ensure patient health than ever before,” says Ellen Olshansky, UC Irvine’s director and professor of nursing science. “Nursing has to be a central force behind healthcare reform efforts. We need to be at the table.”
