Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Chronic pain can result in the inability to perform even routine physical tasks. Fortunately, the conditions causing your pain are often treatable with nonsurgical osteopathic therapies collectively known as physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R).

At the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute, we use physical medicine and rehabilitation therapies to reduce pain, increase function and maximize your quality of life. We always seek to promote the body’s natural tendency toward self-healing.

Therapies may include:

  • Prolotherapy
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Trigger point injections

We apply the tenets of osteopathic medicine to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of all types of illness, disease and injury. We seek to address the root causes of pain, including:

  • Acute and chronic pain
  • Facial pain
  • Generalized pain
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Low back pain
  • Lower extremity pain (hip, knee, ankle and foot)
  • Neck pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Rib and chest wall pain
  • Upper extremity pain (shoulder, arm and hand)
  • Sciatica

In addition, prolotherapy may be recommended for:

  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Carpometacarpal (CMC) joint arthritis
  • Low back pain
  • Osgood Schlatter disease
  • Osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders

Physical medicine and rehabilitation treatments offered at the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute include:

  • Prolotherapy: This treatment involves the injection of an irritant such as dextrose into tender ligaments, tendons and adjacent joint spaces. The technique is commonly used to treat musculoskeletal conditions such as ligament pathology, tendinopathy, fasciopathy and osteoarthritis.

  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections: This therapy offers a proven, drug-free alternative to treat chronic pain caused by musculoskeletal issues. Injections consist of concentrated platelets prepared from centrifuging a solution of your own whole blood with citrate or other compounds.

  • Hormone replacement therapy: Depending on your health history and lifestyle, some women may benefit from hormone replacement to relieve menopausal symptoms. We carefully explore the benefits and risks with you individually.

  • Trigger point injections: TPIs use a local anesthetic or a corticosteroid to treat the painful areas of muscle spasms, typically in the shoulder or upper back. These muscles tend to tense and get knots, which may be associated with tension headaches and fibromyalgia in addition to muscle pain.

The Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute is the only university-affiliated center of its kind in Orange County.
