Ayurvedic Therapies

Ayurvedic medicine offers natural health and disease-prevention therapies that originated more than 5,000 years ago in India. In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means the “knowledge of life.” Through diet and lifestyle modifications, administration of herbs, daily and seasonal routines, specialized therapies and yoga, Ayurveda can reestablish the harmony of your biological makeup.

At the Susan Samueli Center for Integrative Medicine, part of UC Irvine Health, our focus is on specialized Ayurvedic therapies that provide you with physical, mental and emotional benefits. These therapies can help prevent disease, relieve pain and discomfort, purify and detoxify, as well as nourish and rejuvenate your entire being.

Each Ayurvedic therapy can be given on its own or as part of an integrative treatment plan developed in collaboration with the other Samueli Center providers.

Basic Ayurvedic principles

With Ayurvedic medicine, each individual has his or her own unique genetic constitution, known as prakruti. This is expressed by three energies or doshas: vata, pitta and kapha. Our doshas all consist of a unique proportion of the five elements (space, air, fire, water and earth) which exist in nature.

Though your constitution is fixed at birth, factors such as diet, lifestyle and climate can alter your constitution and its internal balance of the five elements. A basic Ayurvedic principle says that by altering these factors, you can affect your balance and counteract changes in your environment.

Ayurvedic healing reestablishes harmony by taking into account your physical, mental and emotional state in order to increase awareness, restore health and promote better quality of life.
