When you are hospitalized, the physician or surgeon who supervises your care is also seeing other patients and performing procedures.
To ensure your well-being throughout your stay at UC Irvine Medical Center, we have highly skilled, board-certified physicians called hospitalists on duty around the clock to oversee your care. They work in collaboration with your primary and specialty physicians.
UC Irvine Health hospitalists coordinate consultations with specialists, order tests and procedures, conduct follow-up checks and provide targeted care throughout your stay.

Benefits of hospitalists
Traditionally, hospitalized patients saw their physicians once a day during routine rounds. Through our Hospitalist Services program, patients see dedicated physicians as often as needed.
Because hospitalists are based at the medical center throughout the day, seven days a week, they provide timely care while maintaining communication with your primary and specialty physicians.
Hospitalists can modify treatment or follow up on a test result on the spot instead of the next day. This not only helps prevent medical complications and enhance your quality of care, it also can shorten your hospital stay and lower your costs.
Many of our hospitalists also are specialists in palliative care, providing comprehensive pain management and emotional support for patients and their families regardless of the stage of illness.
Our hospitalists offer expertise across the spectrum of medical care, including:
