Laryngitis

Laryngitis is caused by an inflammation in the vocal cords. This inflammation prevents them from vibrating as they should, which leads to a hoarse voice.

Symptoms

The most common sign of laryngitis is a weak or non-existent voice.

Other symptoms may include:

  • Dry throat
  • Dry cough
  • Tickling sensation in throat
  • Sore throat
  • Hoarseness

Causes

Laryngitis is commonly caused by overuse of the voice. It can also occur after a cold or upper respiratory infection.

Less common causes can include allergies, postnasal drip, acid reflux and fungal infections.

Treatment

  • Resting. The standard treatment for laryngitis is resting your voice. Do not force the voice out; this can cause damage.
  • Food and fluids. Stay well-hydrated and eat a nutritious, healthy diet to improve healing.
