digestive disease services

H.H. Chao Comprehensive Digestive Disease Center

Digestive diseases can range in severity from troublesome to life-threatening. Fortunately, new advances in research and technology have greatly improved the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.

The H.H. Chao Comprehensive Digestive Disease Center (CDDC), part of UC Irvine Health, is one of the few facilities in the nation — and the only one in Orange County — to provide state-of-the-art care to patients with digestive diseases, including disorders of the esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, colon and rectum.

Our patients receive compassionate care from a multidisciplinary team of clinical experts. These include gastroenterologists, surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, dietitians, nurses, social workers and case managers.

Together, they create individualized treatment plans to optimize your care and promote the best possible outcomes.

At the CDDC, our multidisciplinary team of physicians and healthcare professionals care for patients across the full spectrum of conditions and diseases affecting the gastrointestinal system, including cancers of the liver, pancreas, gall bladder, intestines, stomach, colon, rectum and anus.

Our team includes medical oncologists, gastroenterologists, surgeons, radiation oncologists and a host of other specialists who work collaboratively with you to design a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.

Our bariatric surgeons are national leaders in performing the safest and most effective weight-loss procedures. They team with dieticians, counselors and other healthcare professionals to help obese patients achieve their weight-loss goals and improve their health.

We also have Orange County’s only multidisciplinary program to treat ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. And our hepatology specialists are leaders in the treatment of hepatitis.

Learn more about the services provided by our CDDC team:

The CDDC’s multidisciplinary team of specialists delivers leading-edge treatment for a broad range of gastrointestinal (GI) conditions, including disorders of the esophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, colon and rectum.

We are leaders in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), obesity and inflammatory bowel disease, offering minimally invasive approaches that mean less pain and faster recovery for our patients.

Our specialists, led by Dr. Kenneth Chang, also have pioneered a treatment for patients whose reflux disease has developed into Barrett’s esophagus, a condition in which precancerous cells arise in the esophageal lining. Using thin, flexible tubes called endoscopes, they deliver radiofrequency waves that eliminate abnormal cells with heat energy, allowing healthy cells to replace them.

CDDC physicians use minimally invasive endoscopic techniques for a wide range of other gastrointestinal procedures. Our integrated endoscopic suite features:
  • Capsule endoscopy
  • Endoscopic ultrasound
  • Video endoscopy
  • Enteroscopy
  • Esophageal monometry
  • Radiofrequency ablation
  • 48-hour wireless pH testing
  • ERCP/fluoroscopy
  • Laser photodynamic therapy
  • Cryotherapy

Many of our CDDC physicians have been named Best Doctors in America®, an honor recognizing the top 5 percent of doctors in the nation. They also have been honored as Physicians of Excellence by the Orange County Medical Association.

Working at UC Irvine Medical Center, Orange County’s only university medical facility, our CDDC doctors are actively involved in clinical research trials. This means our patients have access to leading-edge therapies and technologies well before they are available elsewhere.
