Dr. Douglas L. Nguyen is fellowship-trained UC Irvine Health specialist in gastroenterology and hepatology. He has additional expertise in inflammatory bowel disease. His clinical interests include high-risk inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure, irritable bowel syndrome and chronic liver disease.
Nguyen also provides comprehensive clinical nutrition support for patients with gastrointestinal diseases. His goal is to improve his patients’ digestive health and quality of life through specialized medical and nutritional therapies. He is particularly interested in the role of immunonutrition as both a primary therapy and adjunct therapy for the management of chronic inflammatory diseases and cancers.
He has shared his clinical expertise at numerous local, national and international meetings. He also is the author of multiple peer-review publications and book chapters on inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, short bowel syndrome and specialized nutritional support in high-risk populations.
Nguyen earned his medical degree at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine in Ohio. He completed an internal medicine residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., followed by a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at UC Irvine Medical Center.
He also received additional training in high-risk inflammatory bowel disease, specialized nutrition support and management of chronic liver disease.
