Nicole P. Bernal, MD, is a board-certified UC Irvine Health surgeon who specializes in critical care and burn surgery.
Bernal has expertise with skin grafts, wound reconstruction and critical care management for patients with traumatic, acute thermal, chemical and electrical injuries, as well as those with burn-related complications, such as scar contractures and hypertrophic scarring. In her general surgery practice, she performs many laparoscopic procedures, including cholecystectomy, appendectomy and hernia repair, as well as intestinal surgeries.
Bernal received her medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, followed by a general surgery residency at Saint Louis University Hospital. She completed a two-year pediatric surgery fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, followed by fellowship training in surgical critical care at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and a fellowship in burn surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics.
Her research interests include using laser imaging for early determination of burn depth and the development of treatment strategies to prevent severe burn complications.
